Paintings and images give us information about the world around us.

In the middle of the Edo period (1603-1867), a type of landscape picture known as megane-e (spectacle picture) was introduced from the West and became popular. These pictures were drawn using emphasized linear perspective; when viewed through the lens of a special viewing device, they would produce a three-dimensional effect.
With the introduction of linear perspective, people of that time became able to see landscapes with new eyes.

Through these megane-e pictures, people became able to understand landscapes using linear perspective, a technique that had been invented in the West. In the same way, learning about the world through paintings and images means looking at things through the eyes of someone else from the past.

The drawings and images shown in this exhibition invite us to become aware of how we inadvertently look at the world through someone else’s eyes.
