Gallery 2 | "slide/shift"-ARTISTS' FAIR KYOTO: SATELLITE 2024

“Emergence—Development and new changes created from the sliding and shifting” is the concept of the CHISO GALLERY in 2024.  It is inspired by the overlapping and connections with slight shifts in each process of Kyo-Yuzen’s division of labor, as well as the beauty created by the patterns’ shifts envisioned for the body when wearing the kimono.

The three artists exhibiting their works at this exhibition express the concept of “overlapping and connections with shifts” in different ways.

Maki Katayama replaces seemingly non-pictorial motifs such as the life of Marie Curie and the seasons and climates of the world (Spring Equinox, Summer Solstice, Autumn Equinox, Winter Solstice) with paintings using meticulous, long-term research and her own strict rules.  Despite avoiding aesthetic choices, a vast web of information ultimately creates beautiful abstract paintings, intricately layered and intertwined.

Reiko Kinoshita visualizes the soft and subtle spaces inherent in a flat-looking thing by techniques such as spraying paint, photosensitivity, and sun exposure on the wrinkles, folds, and creases created by paper or cloth.  The images that emerge from these processes reveal spaces, changes, and time that were initially overlooked, slipping away from the original intentions.

Takehiro Takao aims to solidify the uncertainty created by distance, perspective in texts, symbols, architecture, and paintings within his own works, using the seemingly futile process itself as a motif.  Imaging dinosaurs through fossils.  He tries to anchor fragmented images that have always been overturned by transferring it to an equivalent position.  This frustration of trying to solidify the unsettled is what generates the chain of imagining.

We hope that “overlapping and connections with shifts” of each of the three artists living in the contemporary era can intersect with the history of creation that has continued for centuries.
