Chiso Gallery is pleased to present a solo exhibition by Konishi Mana.

For 2026, Chiso has adopted the annual theme “Unravel, Then Gather.” This theme explores ways of reexamining established notions of beauty and value, unraveling them, and connecting them to new forms of creativity. Konishi’s artistic practice, which continuously reconstructs landscapes through her own distinctive perspective, resonates deeply with this concept. The exhibition has been shaped through this shared sensibility.

We invite you to experience the quiet dialogue that unfolds among landscape, artist, and artwork, and to trace the subtle connections that emerge within the exhibition space.

My landscape paintings begin with photographs taken of actual places. I create my works while looking at these photographs, which serve as a kind of sketch.

The crisp air of winter, the subtle gradations of gray beneath an overcast sky, the humidity of a greenhouse in a botanical garden — when I visit a place, I carefully carry home these sensory impressions, holding them gently within me. Then I look again at the photographs. What I see there is both the landscape I experienced and another perspective introduced through the camera lens. In those images, I often discover visual qualities that I had not consciously noticed while standing in the landscape itself. It is from these discoveries that a painting begins.

For me, landscape painting is an act that mirrors this year’s gallery theme, “Unravel, Then Gather” – I extract fragments from the boundless world before me and, through the interplay of line, color, and form, unravel and reassemble the overwhelming beauty that already resides in nature.
