CHISO GALLERY | alter in form – Transformation

The exhibition alter in form - Transformation, by Mitsuhiro Ikeda, Kohei Yamada and Hal Matsuda will be held at the Chiso Gallery.
The gallery owned by long-standing Kyo-yuzen store Chiso, founded in 1555, has planned exhibitions introducing archives of nearly twenty thousand timeless products as the headstream of the aesthetics of Chiso, and presents the world of Chiso through exhibitions and events that allow experiences of the Chiso aesthetics in its many forms, through diverse viewpoints such as history, craftwork and art.

Each artist has an origin to why they started painting, and this origin appears again and again, undergoing transformation. Whether it is realistic or abstract, it is preserved as a base, while the external form continues to move.

Yamada uses lines which are derived from realistic forms of objects as his start point, from which new lines, colours and shapes are derived, which renew themselves as if to bounce back in the rectangle of the canvas. When this movement reaches its climax, the screen is frozen and set. What is depicted there, is the possibility of the development of the original and traces of transformation, and there, the viewers create a new image.

Matsuda's production is based on a skepticism towards and the possibility of things like fiction and the virtual in real life; in a place he calls VA (virtual abstraction) where reality and virtual are merged together, viewers are made to reimagine the world. Through this practice he attempts to transform the way we perceive reality itself.

Though I base my work on real scenery and things, rather than trying to reproduce this, I wish to depict a new 'imaginary place' that wavers between the 'tactile' paint, and image of 'representation'. Based on the motivations created through abrasion with the outer world, the three undergo various somatic, physical and technical processes, transforming, and generating a new exterior. By having the viewer come into contact with this new exterior, I hope that they can feel their possibility of perhaps transforming the world and forming a new creativity.
