"An Unbroken Legacy of Beauty" From Nihonga Artist, Keinen Imao to Contemporary Kimono Designers | gallery 1

The history of craftsmanship at Chiso has been deeply supported by connections with numerous Nihonga (Japanese-style paintings) painters and designers.  One such prominent figure is Keinen Imao, a renowned Nihonga painter from Kyoto who was closely associated with Chiso.  From the early Meiji period (1868-1912), Imao created countless designs for Yuzen dyeing and embroidered products for us.

As this year marks the 100th anniversary of Imao's passing, we are focusing on the lineage that extends from him to modern-day Chiso designers.

Highlighting individuals like Keizan Umemura, who apprenticed under Imao and worked as an artisan at Chiso, and Umemura’s disciple Senshu Shiba, along with designers trained by Shiba, we trace an unbroken line of creativity.  Through their designs and textiles, we witness a continuity of artistic legacy. This aesthetic sensibility which has been passed down through generations of teacher-student relationships is a significant asset to Chiso.  As it evolves, this creative process remains connected – sustaining the ongoing creation of beauty for the future.
