Threads of Connection — Exploring the Ties Between Kimono, Culture, and Self | gallery 1

The decorative patterns that grace the surface of kimono captivate us with their imaginative motifs, vibrant colors, and richly varied layouts—offering visual delight both when worn and when viewed.

This exhibition invites you to explore the charm of kimono patterns more deeply by showcasing CHISO’s modern archive of kimono textiles, primarily dyed using the traditional Kata-Yuzen (stencil style Yuzen) techniques.  These archival textiles will be displayed alongside related works, such as Edo-period novels that inspired literary motifs, or other kimono pieces whose motifs feature similar themes.  Some textiles, once sold in department stores, will be presented with the original promotional texts and magazines in which the garments appeared.

Kimono patterns connect with the world through diverse perspectives, allowing for free and personal interpretation. Perhaps a single kimono may open the door for you to unseen beauty and unexpected joys. We hope this exhibition becomes a starting point for such discovery.
