Through the works of Matsudaira Rina, this exhibition invites viewers into landscapes that unfold without limit.

For this occasion, Matsudaira has created new works inspired by the compositional logic of kimono patterns. In kimono design, repeating patterns are characteristically conceived without a fixed top or bottom orientation. Drawing on this approach, Matsudaira has produced pictorial spaces in which the upper and lower elements of the landscape intermingle in complex yet natural ways. She has also created paired works employing the technique known as “Shiho Okuri,” in which patterns connect seamlessly in all four directions. These two-panel works can be arranged vertically or horizontally, and even when their positions are exchanged, the landscape remains continuous and coherent as a single image.

In any such pattern composition, repeating pictorial motifs—rather than a single isolated image—requires a high level of technical skill and a keen awareness of how scenery connects across the surface. Matsudaira brings these techniques and sensibilities together with an effortless lightness, opening up new expanses within her landscapes. This expansion extends beyond vertical and four-directional development to encompass a sense of spatial depth.

When we engage with these works, we experience either a bird’s-eye view of a space that seems to continue beyond the constraints of the pictorial frame, or a sensation of being drawn inward into the image itself.
