Meanings behind kimono designs
Traditional kimonos are adorned with a variety of designs, each holding deep Japanese symbolism. Here are some commonly used motifs that express universal wishes and desires:
Tachibana (Japanese Citrus) — Eternal Prosperity
This design symbolizes the fruits and leaves of Tachibana, a citrus native to Japan. It's traditionally associated with longevity and eternal prosperity, as the leaves remain vibrant throughout the year while bearing fruit. Therefore, Tachibana is drawn as a symbol of good luck.
Kiku (Chrysanthemum) — Longevity
Kiku is a popular motif in traditional crafts and kimonos. Its symbolism for longevity stems from a Chinese myth that says, "One who drinks the dew from a Kiku flower shall live longer."It's also associated with nobility, as ancient Japanese aristocrats cherished the flower.
Noshi — Enduring Happiness
This design, resembling a bundle of ribbons, originates from "Noshi" — a traditional Japanese knot attached to gifts as a symbol of happiness.Several Noshi are bundled up and tied together in this kimono design, expressing the wish to collect happiness and maintain good relationships. The stretching strings symbolize wishes for long-lasting happiness.
Hiogi (Japanese floding fan) — Nobleness and Good Luck
Japanese noblewomen cherished Hiogi, a gorgeous folding fan made of Japanese Hinoki cypress wood adorned with beautiful patterns. The fan's shape symbolizes good luck as it widens towards the edge, metaphorically representing the development and succession of good events.
